INTERVIEW: ZERO (SINGAPORE)

NAME

ZERO

AGE

32 sometimes 23

WHAT YOU DO

Artist/Part-time Lecturer

WHERE YOU FROM/LIVE

At home.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY TO LIFE
I have many philosophies in life, but there’s one at the top of my head: respect everything and everyone around you. Be humble. I AM ZERO.

WHAT MOVES YOU?
Depends, most of the time its a taxi. Sometimes bus and train. Oh yeah, my legs.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT GRAFFITI AND STREET ART?
It’s art for the 90%.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
It was totally for the fun of it. Going out into the streets and leaving works of art. Much like street skating
I just did it, grinded all the curbs we saw and such, the authorities never came to mind.

ANY FUNNY BOMBING STORIES?
You know Sheryo? Went out to do stuff with her years back and had to carry her on my shoulder for her to reach up higher. I wonder how a girl that skinny could weigh a tonne.

CLOSE CALL WITH THE COPS?
Nope, I am an exemplary man with astute character who ran away from the cops a few times in my life.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHARACTERS. WILL THEY EVER SMILE?
My characters are a representation of what goes on within our inner self. The race against time, the struggle within the system that we place ourselves within. They are morbid, they are tired, dejected and melancholic. They will never smile. If you see a smiling one, it means that the Mayans are right and the world is going to end soon.
PAINT US A PICTURE WITH WORDS: WHAT IS YOUR MOST OUTRAGEOUS BOMBING ESCAPADE DREAM?
The Parliament House will be a good start.

IF NOT ART, THEN WHAT?
I’ll be at the other end of the spectrum I guess, a banker earning and cheating people off shitloads of their life savings by creating new products out of thin air, and selling it to them as bonds and shit like that. Super cars, sentosa cove mansions, sex and drug parties, think that the whole world could be bought by a thick wad of cash, fuck up a big investment deal and screwing my life over, get depressed, attempt suicide, lose everything I own. Get struck by an epiphany and then start creating art to find myself again.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU AND WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKELY BE DOING?
At home. Replying to these bunch of questions.

WHAT MAKES YOU A BAD ASS STREET ARTIST?
RSCLS.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
A couple of shows lined up this year. The one I am really excited for is my first solo painting show. I put alot of pressure on myself, especially when it comes to my own solo show. A few other things here and there, big plans in the head. The future is gonna be a riot.

HOW CAN ZERO CONTRIBUTE CHANGE TO THE WORLD?
Be a better man for myself. Be a better person for society, be a voice for them, I can’t change the whole world by myself but if i can inspire a few around me to change the way they look at their surroundings, I am sure they will do the same for others.
*Nowadays, Zero is busy spending his semi-permanent holidays musing about matters of consequences, updating his overdue posts over the past year, (check out his blog’s SPANKIN’ NEW LOOK), snacking, and laughing at us. Alternately.
