KO FLOW – SINGAPORE

NAMES: Wayne Liu / DJ KoFlow

AGE: 29

WHERE YOU FROM: Lion City Singapore

WHAT YOU DO: DJ/Turntablist/Beat Maker

WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY: Understand the old Skool to see the new skool, Being Fresh, Original and no biting.

LATEST WORK?
Latest work, would be the Youth Olympic Games which i have a hand in remixing a song and performed for the opening and closing ceremony. Next project, a album base on turntable expression entitled ” The Turntable Instrumentalist ” release date is on the 26 nov at the esplande ‘Late Night Series’

SUSTAINABILITY?
Balance! Its not actually by choice, i knew what my first love was, and thats ‘Scratching’. But i couldn’t sustain myself doing just that in singapore, cause it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But luckily Liquidroom took me in as a resident. And also, i was given the freedom to dictate what i wanna play as long as i can keep the crowd. I knew what the crowd wanted but at the same time i wasn’t gonna give all in, and so the musical direction has always been 40% mainstream, 40% true skool and 20% turntablism. From there on the formula has been kept… However end of the day, i’m a turntablist and i love music. Music comes in all form, Hip Hop is my roots but music is what i do. I don’t call myself a hip hop dj nor a house dj nor a electro dj, i play all sorts of stuff cos i like all sort of stuff.

INSPIRATION?
Lately, i have been very inspired by a place called ‘Blujazz’, especially where on the ground level,i often jam with a bunch of passionate musicians for ‘AYASCHOOL’. We create ‘free flow’ style of music, just like in the jamming studio, nothing is pre-plan. it’s really just what we feel but accept that there’s a crowd. And that forces me to keep myself on the toe and make sure everything i do make sense in that piece of music! i usually have a setup of a mpc 2500 and 1 turntable and 1 mixer….

IS EVERYONE A DJ?
But not everyone knew the feeling of using real vinyls to dj. And of cos, not every dj knows how to scratch. You can understand the theory of djing, and start mixing within a few weeks, but you take alot more years to cultivate one, to ‘scratch’ and ‘beat juggle’. Not every DJ is a Musician.
