STARING BLANKLY AT THE SCREEN?
Time management is one of the toughest battles any aspiring musician goes through, especially if you try to fit in a personal life as well. I’m very determined to reach my goals, sometimes just to keep writing and improving, I’ll just sit in front of the computer hoping for some sort of inspiration to hit me, to write something magical.. but I can just end up staring blankly at the screen. You have to be disciplined about the time you have. There’s no time to waste!

BEING SURROUNDED BY THE RIGHT PEOPLE?

I’m lucky, I’ve been blessed to have been surrounded by the best. Producers, musicians, designers, turntablists, the list goes on, so I’m constantly inspired by their work, their achievements, that’s why I believe a lot in collaborations and I think that will be the key to my success, one day.

With every collaboration you do, you will surely learn something new about your craft or at least the way you approach it, from that you will always improve. It should always be a learning process, never think that you know everything.

TALKING BOUT MY GENERATION.
My generation is when changes will take place, regardless if it’s bad or good, because of the mentality we have, because of the questions we seek for the perfect answer for, everything will evolve and mature.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO SHAKE IT ALL UP?
At least in Singapore, there’s always this stigmata of not being able to succeed in music, or being sustainable in it. I want to be the guy that changes that, because I really think that, that mentality is still there because there’s no one to believe in. I’m working real hard to be that guy that inspires future Singaporeans to pursue music seriously.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
It varies really. There isn’t a real handbook, but I like to be pressured. I seem to perform better then, regardless if it’s for a song or a performance, those butterflies bring out the best in me.

TURN US ON TO SOMETHING?
Sixx. My priority is still with my band Sixx. There’s really something special in the music create. We’re a 9 piece band, 2 vocalists and 7 instruments. We’ve been successful very quickly, playing overseas and at landmark stages in Singapore.

We’ve been told that our brand of Hip Hop is very refreshing and assessable, anyone can groove to it. That’s an awesome compliment, being from Singapore you need a formula like that coz something too hardcore or too abstract might not relate to the masses.

CREATIVE EXPERIENCES?
It’s hard to pin point a moment but there are times when you really feel that magic that brings everything together. I’ve had situations where I’ve performed a song for a good year but suddenly, there’s a moment that ignites a spark, regardless alone or with your collaborator, that changes everything.

You rearrange everything and then suddenly.. you just sit there.. going.. wow.. why didn’t I think of that before. David blaine has tricks, you can find real magic in the jamming studio.

WHAT ‘S PLAYING?
I’m on the new Erykah Badu track, Window seat. Absolutely love what she brings to the table. The best thing about being with Sixx is that, because there are 9 of us; 10 if you include our sound engineer, there is so much of variety in music to be exposed to.

My guitarist will feed me with Imogen Heap, my pianist will introduce acid jazz to me, Maxwell and musiq soulchild in one ear and then some Broken Social Scene in the other. Somehow we manage to bring a fresh sound of Hip Hop out of this. Side note!! I looove Coldplay. Huge fan.

WHAT IS YOUR SCENE AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?
I’ve been involved with the Hip hop scene for about 7 years. My first opportunity was in a club back in the day called WuBar for a open mic session. I remember the track was called, “How it’s supposed to be”. There was bad ventilation, invites were on a standard a4 paper in black and white that someone printed at home.

I knew I wanted to do it, a ‘give it a go and worry about it later’ mentality. Lo behold, I got really positive reviews and in no time was invited back for more showcases. Ever since then, I’ve never stopped. My music has matured for sure since then but I’m glad it did.. I’ve found my own flow and sound and from that, have treated every show like it’s my first because every impression you give counts.

TOP 3 MOST INFLUENTIAL MUSIC FOR YOUR GENERATION?
Jagged little pill by Alanis Morisette. All eyes on me by Tupac and every Coldplay album there is.

YOUR SCENE IN YOUR CITY?
It’s still growing, but the support has improved tremendously, like 200%? Doors are opening, people are listening. We’ve now got television shows providing platforms for artistes to expose their music. It’s only going to get better.

FAV THINGS TO DO IN YOUR CITY?
An afternoon at Haji Lane and an evening in Orchard Road is perfect.

BEST PARTY IN YOUR CITY… WHAT IS IT?
Good Times at Blu Jazz on every first Friday of the month. No doubt about it.
